Mouthguards are a dental device that protect your teeth from fractures or dislodgement and also to reduce the trauma on the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) if there is an impact to the head and jaw.
While mouthguards are readily available over the counter in many pharmacies, custom-fitted mouthguards are made by dentists and dental laboratories. These offer a superior fit and better protection for your teeth, and only require two dental appointments to manufacture for you.
During the first appointment, the dentist will take a dental impression of the teeth, and the mold that is made will be sent to a lab for your custom mouthguard to be fabricated.
Once your mouthguard is delivered to our clinic, a second dental appointment will be made to ensure that the mouthguard fits correctly on your teeth. If necessary, the dentist will adjust your mouthguard in the appointment so it sits comfortably in the mouth.
Sports mouthguards
At Curae Dental, we can make custom-made sports mouthguards for all ages, as well as other types of mouthguards for treatment purposes. All mouthguards are specifically fitted to each patient individually, and are made using medical-grade thermopolymer materials.
If you are involved in indoor/outdoor activities or contact sports, it is advised to discuss with the dentist to arrange a custom-made mouthguard and protect your teeth before any damage is done to your smile. Our highly experienced dentists will be able to answer any questions or sport-specific considerations that you may have.
Benefits of a custom-made mouthguard
Custom-made mouthguards are designed specifically for your set of teeth. Whether it is for contact sports, or for conditions such as bruxism and sleep apnea, having a better fit increases the effectiveness of treatment.
Benefits of custom-made mouthguards over generic store-bought mouthguards include:
- Superior fit, as they are designed and fabricated using a mold of your teeth;
- Better shock absorption, due to the higher quality materials used in their fabrication;
- Less likely to crack and break, as they are created using medical-grade malleable thermopolymer materials; and
- Ease of fitting, over two appointments at the clinic: one for the impression, and another for the fitting.
Although custom-made mouthguards may have a higher initial cost, they are a standard in professional sports due to their higher level of protection.
By protecting your teeth properly with a custom-made mouthguard, you will be investing in the health of your teeth by avoiding any serious injury that could result in costly tooth restoration or extraction procedures.
Night guards to wear while sleeping
Night guards are made to help with conditions such as bruxism and TMJD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction).
These conditions are quite common and are often easily treated. They tend to be a result of stress, malocclusion of the teeth where the teeth and jaw do not line up correctly, or due to the formation of bad habits. In some rare cases, they can also be a symptom or side effect of more serious diseases such as Huntington or Parkinson’s disease.
Bruxism is the constant grinding or clenching of teeth. This can cause pain and swelling on the side of the jaw, headaches, popping or clicking sounds from the TMJ and even wear away your teeth over time. Patients suffering from bruxism tend to develop cases of jaw dysfunction such as TMJD, which can lead to painful swelling and lockjaw.
You may need a night guard if you notice your jaw is often sore when you wake up. Dull headaches and tooth pains can also be caused by bruxism, and may also be treated with night guards.
As with other types of mouthguards, it is recommended to have one professionally custom-made, as they offer a superior fit to improve treatment effectiveness.
When having a custom mouthguard or night guard fitted at Curae Dental we will also educate you of any maintenance and cleaning for your dental device.
