Restorative dentistry refers to an area of specialised dentistry in which dentists cater to the management and restoration of the mouth to keep it healthy and functional. Dental restoration procedures generally involve restoring function with the use of dental implants and crowns, or patching damaged teeth with fillings and root canal therapy.
There are several areas of dental specialties that make up restorative dentistry.
Endodontics
Endodontics is the field of study and treatment of the interior of teeth, most importantly but not limited to the tooth pulp tissue. Endodontic specialists aim to preserve dental pulp tissue that is in good health, while removing all of the pulp tissue that is diseased in procedures such as root canal therapy.
Periodontics
Periodontics is the area of dentistry that specialises in the maintenance of the supporting structures of teeth, such as the gums, bone, and teeth roots, and treatment of diseases that could affect them. Poor oral health can lead to build-ups of bacterial plaque between teeth which can cause inflammatory infections and tooth loss. A periodontist aims to save teeth when possible, and treat diseased gum tissue and other conditions such as gingivitis. Periodontal treatment also involves the surgical placement and maintenance of dental implants that may later support dental crowns, bridges or fixed dentures.
Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics is the area of dentistry that focuses on dental prostheses. Dental prosthetics are devices that replace missing teeth and aid in the rehabilitation of different functions of the mouth. These can be removable and include acrylic or metallic partial dentures as well as acrylic full dentures. They can also be fixed in place such as crowns, bridges and implants

Chipped Tooth Repairs
A chipped tooth is generally nothing to despair about, as modern dentistry is capable of restoring a tooth back to its normal shape and make it look as good as new. Procedures that can be involved in repairing a chipped or fractured tooth include fillings, composite bonding and fitting dental crowns.
Crowns & Bridges
Crowns are a type of prosthesis used to cover and protect a tooth that has been affected by tooth decay or damaged through physical trauma or injury. If a tooth is cracked, or a cavity is found to be too large, the tooth is cleaned and covered with a protective cap called a crown. The tooth structure is reduced down to have a custom made crown fitted, this crown is then cemented using a strong bonding agent. A crown preparation and crown fit procedure generally require multiple visits and other treatments may be required first to ensure a healthy and sound tooth.
A dental bridge is a single artificial tooth that is linked to two adjoining crowns fitted to sound teeth either side of a missing tooth. A bridge will be cemented into place with the two linked crowns with the use of an adhesive bonding agent.
As the construction of crowns and bridges are carried out in a laboratory, these procedures are commonly spread over two appointments.
Dentures
Dentures are a dental prosthetic device that serve as a replacement for missing teeth. Having a denture made can restore your smile and prevent your facial muscles from weakening around the mouth. They also make it easier to bite, chew and talk.
Fillings
A filling is a restorative dental procedure that involves filling cavities using a filling material. Cavities, or dental caries, are typically the result of tooth decay, presenting as small holes and cracks in the enamel of the tooth. This decay is caused by bacteria and acid wear from foods and drinks such as wine or sugary drinks. The enamel, which is the protective layer of the tooth, thins out over time, and if left untreated, cavities may appear and eventually leave the inner tooth exposed. By sealing these cavities in a timely manner, the tooth is protected from further damage and more intrusive procedures can be prevented.
Root Canals
Also known as root canal therapy (RCT) , this restorative process involves removing and cleaning out a decayed or diseased tooth’s nerve or pulp chamber in order to retain the tooth rather than having it removed.
A hole is drilled into the crown of the tooth to gain access to the nerve chamber. The infected pulp tissue is cleaned away and the nerve chamber is filled back up with plastic material to reinforce the tooth structure. A permanent filling is placed to seal the root canal therapy and restore shape and function.
Root canal procedures are relatively painless with the help of local anaesthetic.
